|Match Report: 22nd June, 6:00PM, Garden Fields, Rothampstead Park|
Garden Fields 126-9, Crabtree 128-9 - Crabtree win by 1 wicket.
Result: Win by 1 wicket
A dramatic finish at Rothampstead park. With Crabtree apparently cruising to victory needing 28 off the last 6 overs with plenty of wickets in hand, we stuttered over the line thanks to a wide and a no-ball off the last ball(s) with one wicket left. Exhausting to watch. Chasing 128 to win, contributions from Rob C (28), Ian B (29*), Ali R (15) and myself (17) meant we were in a solid position with two batsmen in the hutch, but a couple of run outs and some ambitious shots along with some tight bowling pulled Garden Fields back in to contention. Then an inspirational call by "vice captain" Waters to promote Fred E (a rapid fire 10) up the order to no. 9 reduced the the target to 15 off two overs and a majestic lofted off drive for 4 from Phil left 8 to get off the last over, which included a wicket, 5 scampered runs off the bat, a wide and two no-balls.
Such drama seemed far removed earlier in the day. Garden Fields batted well accumulating runs but never dominating the bowling. Particular mention to Nick T with impressive figures of 3 for 6 from 3 overs, and Phil W 2 for 7 off his two overs. Darren also bowled well with figures of 1 for 12 from his 3 overs. The fielding was a bit of a curate's egg - another stunning catch from Rob C, but at least 4 dropped catches and a missed stumping (sorry Fred, had to mention that as it was off my bowling!). And finally, a night to forget for Tim J - dropped a catch, lost his run up and accuracy, and then run out for 0, at least he was there at the end to signal wide and no-ball!
