Crabtree lose narrowly to Carpenters Arms.
Result: Lost by 3 wickets
A balmy Sunday afternoon in Rothamsted Park provided perfect conditions for our annual match against the Carpenters Arms a 35 over match so a result was certain. Despite posting a creditable 179 for 7 Crabtree were just not able to defend this total and lost with little more than 1 over remaining.
The Crabtree team had a somewhat eclectic look about it with several sons being drafted in due to lack of availability from within the senior members ( Wimbledon and Lords to blame methinks !! ). It was good to welcome Neal Rawlinson and Jonathan Waters to the team as well as a first appearance for Nick Bailey who turns out for Harpenden under 13's. Sadly we were still only 9 strong so an uphill struggle was envisaged.
Star of the show for Crabtree was Richard Bailey who opened the batting and immediately set about the Carpenters bowling ending up with a superb 80 when looking good for a maiden century. Richard was well supported by Goodwin ( 9), Jenkins ( 11), Reid (16 ) and skipper Jonty ( 28 not out ) who saw out the innings with last man Nick Bailey who scored an excellent 7.
The Carpenters innings got off to a nervous start due to some fine hostile bowling from Jenkins ( 2 for 35 )and 'Steady Eddy' Martin Goodwin (3 for 40 ) and at one stage the oppo were 35 for 5. A rare sight for Crabtree was seeing three catches taken including one absolute stunner by Rawlinson Junior due mainly to the catching tips given to him by Jonty before the game !!!!!!!
Unfortunately our wicket taking dried up although Jonathan Waters ( 1 for 32 )bowled a fine economical spell and only one more wicket was taken by Nick Bailey ( 1 for 14 )tempting one of their danger men into hook which was skied to keeper Reid. King, Neal Rawlinson and Richard Bailey all bowled but we were unable to break through their late order, three of whom scored more than 30 and they reached the target with seven wickets down in the 33rd over. Worth noting that their highest scorer was extras with 40......33 of which were wides or no balls !!!!
The Carpenters Arms Pub then provided a few welcome pints after the afternoons excertions
