Match Report: 5th July, 2:00PM, The Holly Bush, Wheathampstead CC

Close but no cigar

Result: Crabtree Lost by 10 runs

On a lovely sunny, if windy afternoon Crabtree Dads assembled at Wheathamstead Cricket Club to meet local rivals The Bush for our annual fixture.   Uncannily the coin toss suited both captains and The Bush duly batted.  Nick T and Nick B(ailey) opened the bowling, with youth bowling uphill of course.  The Bush suffered an immediate setback when their opening bat, who is also normally their fastest bowler, pulled a thigh second ball – bad luck Charlie.  This brought Big to the wicket with Bonney.

Twenty-five overs later, having seen off both Nicks, Martin Goodwin, Jason de Klerk, Andy Gummer and Amit Mathur, Bonney finally fell to Crabtree debutant Russell Brooks, and a sharp catch at long on by Andy Gummer for his favourite score of 79.  Big went on to get another ton, his third this year all undefeated, but Crabtree stuck to their task.  On a very good wicket the Bush ended up on 233 for 5 at tea with the other wickets going to Jason and Amit.

Crabtree set about the target straight away – a brisk 20 from Rich Bailey, rather cut-off in his prime.  Andy Gummer, scythed down by a grubber apart, everyone got going.  Tim Jenkins, responded to his captain’s instruction “just smash it Tim” with a fast and furious 45.  Guest star Simon Bullen came and went entertainingly.  Russell Brooks showed the benefit of a tremendous eye with some great strikes at the end and Jason de Klerk held it all together with a magnificent 70 not out.  With two overs to go and 33 needed, Nick T joined Jason at the crease.  Plenty of swinging but little timing; the Bush ended up 10 runs shy at the end of their overs.

A great game of cricket, where everyone gave their all.  This was not a game lost, but not quite won.  As always the Bush were excellent opposition and hosts, and the whole game was overseen and impartially managed by umpire Paul Arnerich.  Not a single dubious decision and some great advice to Nick B, who might just appeal next time he hits Big on the front pad when he’s only on 10.
