|Match Report: 27th June, 6:00PM, Garden Fields, Verulamium Park|
Result: Won by 38 runs
With only 10 players down to play against a side who have beaten us over the last few years did not augur well, particularly when delayed arrivals meant that we chose to bat first on a shockingly bad pitch.
Garden Fields had a quick bowling attack although it was perhaps not a surface on which to "let it rip" and so the highest score by far was 40 extras where wicket keeping was difficult and the short boundaries were often reached following wides or bad bounces. Tim Jenkins scored a very good 32 NO before the run-rate slowed down. Ben Dearman and son Jake managed to get the scoreboard ticking over again sharing a partnership of over 50 with Jake scoring 24 NO. The innings ended at 145-5 off 20 overs.
The new youth policy at Crabtree meant that we were able to field a 22 year-old, two 18 year-olds and one 13 year-old, taking our average age to about half what it was last year. All 4 youths bowled their 3 overs well (Nick Bailey 2-13), ably backed up by the usual suspects. but notably Amit (3 overs 2-13). In conceding only 7 extras (5 byes) Tim J's performance combined with his batting does however merit man of the match. Although Garden Fields smashed it about in the last over they could only score 107 off their 20 overs, giving the 10 men of Crabtree a win by 38 runs.
Garden Field were gracious in defeat, saying afterwards in the Six Bells that ours was the best bowling attack they had faced this year by some margin.
